About the DepartmentThe undergraduate Department of Food & Nutrition offers General course & Honours course since 2010 & 2018 respectively. The department has 1 full time Govt. approved CWTT & 1 Guest Lecturer who try to their best for betterment of the departments and the students. The department has 3 well equipped laboratories including 1 cookery lab, 1 Physiology cum Microbiology lab, 1 biochemistry lab. The students prepare and display the departmental Annual Wall Magazine, “WELLNESS”. Every year in September month, the department celebrates ‘National nutrition month’ through many activities like either by giving food stall or by arranging poster-model competition. Department arranges Extension Lectures and free health check-up camp throughout the year. Besides the course curriculum, those extracurricular activities enable students to enrich their knowledge, to gain self- confidence and to experience with outdoor activities. An Undergraduate Degree in Food & Nutrition under West Bengal State University enables students to understand about the necessity of proper nutrition for maintaining a good health at every stages of life and prepares students for providing service to professional, governmental, and local community organizations as a nutritionist or a dietitian. Programme Specific outcomeFood and nutrition is a small part of health science. It is a multidisciplinary subject consisting of the following disciplines- Nutrition science, Food science, Dietetics, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Food technology, Biotechnology, Food service management, Molecular biology, Physiology and many more. Students are taught on the above mentioned topics under course curriculum. They not only are provided theoretical, knowledge but they also have to attend the field work, visit food testing lab, to do diet survey of neighboring community and also laboratory work. Among all the disciplines, a special attention is given to the “dietetics and meal planning” course as dietitians and nutritionists are not only an open field but also jobs on these fields are more abundant.
