The institute is named after 'Panihati', a place which boasts of a rich cultural heritage. Panihati played
host to legendary religious preachers like Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Nityananda. It also provided a
secure platform for the spread of Islam and Buddhism. Panihati also showed the way for socio-cultural
movements (specially during eighteenth and nineteenth century) . A trip down memory lane reveals the
traces of footprints of internationally renowned figures like Rabindranath Tagore, Ramkrishna
Paramahansadev, Swami Vivekananda, Mahatma Gandhi, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and many
others. Such legendry figures have been seperately drawn to Panihati for its rich and diverse heritage,
one that Panihati will continue to boast of for centuries to come.
Panihati Mahavidyalaya had been established in 1976 at Sodepur, North 24 - Parganas and achived the
State Government and UGC affiliation in 1989. As a co-education degree college Panihati Mahavidyalaya
started its journey with Honours courses from 1999. Within a short time span it expanded the subject
areas in the field of Humanities, Commerce and Sciences, and in almost every year more than one new
subject with Honours / Advance curriculum is being introduced to meet the demand of present time.
Since 2007, the college was under University of Calcutta. But from 2008 with the establishment of West
Bengal State University in North 24 - Parganas, this college was included within the territory of the newly
founded State University. In remarkably short duration the college flourished and certified as 'Grade B' by
the National Asssessment and Accreditation Committee (NAAC). The college is aimed to cater to the
requirements of the local students for higher education and providing them the opportunity of self
sustainance through advancement of learning. Panihati Mahavidyalaya is missioned to carry the socio-
cultural heritage of the place with a perfect blend of academic excellence to meet the challenge of the
time.
